Simple travel tips for the international traveler during the holiday season

During this holiday season, shaking up your routine to travel can bring so many moments of joy, but there can also be challenges when visiting a new destination. However, you can reduce those travel difficulties to a minimum with these simple tips.

  1. Find the nearest ATM without leaving your hotel room.

The Diners Club Travel Tools mobile app has its own ATM Locator, meaning you won’t have to waste half a morning searching for a bank machine that’ll actually take your card.

  1. Learn (some) of the language.

Becoming completely fluent in Spanish before your upcoming Barcelona trip might not be feasible, but learning simple phrases like “please,” “thank you,” and “sorry” in the local language can go a long way.

Tip: No more mistaking foreign shampoos for face moisturizer. Install Google Translate and it’ll (at least attempt to) translate whatever text you hold your phone camera up against.

  1. Download a local map to your phone.

Getting purposely lost on a trip can be one of the best things you can do. How else could you stumble upon that hidden Paris restaurant or the best live jazz player since Miles Davis? But being really, truly lost is no fun. Download a Google Map of the area you’re visiting and you can use it offline to navigate the labyrinthine streets of Naples or Rome.

  1. Get Wi-Fi wherever you are.

There are so many benefits to being a Diners Clubmember. One of the handiest travel perks is that it gives you access to 64 million hotspots in 180 countries, for free.

  1. Know the local tipping practices.

In Japan, tips really aren’t expected. In the States, they definitely are. Here’s a helpful article on tipping customs around the globe. [Note to Priti: here we could link to the ‘tipping practices: dos and don’ts’ article that I did the other week]

  1. Make the most of airport lounges.

Typically featuring fast Wi-Fi, good food, newspapers, and peace and quiet, airport lounges can make the difference between feeling tired and overwrought or relaxed and refreshed when you fly. And with your Diners Club card, you get access to more than 700 airport lounges around the world. Lucky you! The rejuvenating power of a shower following a red-eye flight cannot be overstated.

  1. Easily convert the local currency.

The Diners Club mobile app lets you convert more than 150 currencies. This can be such a useful tool, especially when you’re deciding whether that hip café’s pear tart is a steal or ludicrously overpriced.

  1. Keep copies of your important documents.

Keeping physical and digital copies of your passport, visas, travel insurance documents, and any important phone numbers in case of an emergency will make your life so much easier if anything does happen.

Download the Diners Club mobile app for more great travel tips and city guides to destinations that range from L.A. to Dubai.

Always. You’re welcome and Happy Holidays!
